Who Truly Won in the Papal Elections of 1978 - the CIA or the KGB?

Downtown Philadelphia Street Corner Billboards 1971 *

Putting aside some truly false and or misleading family oral history about a very distant cousin and the Archbishopric chair in Philadelphia, I have to reconsider making some real and or (my?) imaginary cross referencing of facts "sacred" and or profane "secular".

Two glaring facts stick out in my mind in the last two years, with consideration of the long term plannings of the RC church and the Czar's Private Secret Police, the KGB. Isn't it a marvel how institutional or ganizations like the RC church and or the Czar's gatekeeping Bodyguards go on and on like a law of physics, once set in motion.

And since all politics and religion are LOCAL, let me mention two things.

The official PR line of a snake like Donald Trump that he took a million dollar loan from daddy and starting flipping trash properties in Philly while a student at Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania is total bullshit.

The extra truth that many liars throw into the story, any story, is that Donald's name is not on any Philly deeds or records is because he did not want to make the prices go up. A real flipper would want the name thing to go around, to start a trend, and then have other real estate investors get on a gentrification Ponzi scheme of sorts and the first in to cash out as the later investors come along pay much more.

Like I say, I lay claim to it, that Trump paid back daddy with profits from money laundering probably first with the Philly mob, the Angelo Bruno crowd, and very familiar with the then Police Chief and later Mayor Frank Rizzo back then in 1967. And then when Donald got in over his head, like he does on every thing he does, he found a friendly front for the KGB and or they found him is more accurate and the M.O. of Trump INC was established with the brilliant Wharton Student Trump and the gentlemenly "Cs" (never really earned in any way shape or form) of an I-V school @Penn, and an "ivy league school" being in folk or origin myth being one of seven or eight American college institutions in existence before the American Revolution and or break with British Rule.

So getting back to Vatican murder and backstabbing and the usual shit thereabouts in Rome, I always wondered why one of my distant cousins, as a popular Irish American auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia did not succeed Cardinal O'Hara upon his death. ???

And then all of a sudden, the Polish Catholic minority in Philly, and not the Irish majority of RCs takes front stage with an auxiliary bishop from Cleveland (Cleveland !?) taking over the archbishop's chair in Philly.

Joe McShea did not have to bear any or much  embarrassment as a very popular auxiliary bishop in Philly, who delivered the eulogy at (Saint) Mother Katherine Drexel's funeral, and serve the new Pollack archbishop by getting an almost instant consolation prize of five northern counties (mostly coal country) of the Philly archdiocese in "upstate" Pennsylvania, by being named First bishop of the newly created Diocese of Allentown Pennsylvania. Or the grand duchy of Allentown as a reward to Joe from his once time boss, Papal Nuncio to the United States for 25 years, 1933-1959.

Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (24 February 1883 – 17 December 1973)

And also a good friend of Amleto's older brother Gaetano to whom Joe McShea as a seminarian in Rome would nightly read in private to the poorly sighted Gaetano in his papal apartments, or so the might be faulty family oral history goes. (in that family history, the older brother was much older, not two years older, and almost legally blind and could no longer read lengthy dogmatic documents without assistance etc.)

Gaetano Cicognani (26 November 1881 – 5 February 1962)

No problem for Secretary of State Amleto Cicognani of the Vatican to carve out a new diocese in Pennsylvania and move a few chess pieces around the American political landscape like auxiliary bishop John Krol into Archbishop John Krol of Philadelphia.

All well and good, and I have written about John Krol being one of the foremost starters of the American Culture War about Birth Control and Abortion after Humanae Vitae, RC encyclical regarding Command State Economy control over the reproductive product of the female part of the male / female unit of the species aka Man.

I say all this to condense with what I have stated many times and in many ways over the years here on my blogs, about how Archbishop John Krol wanted to be the first American pope and how he relentlessly campaigned years after year and took trips to third world countries where First Pennsylvania Bank and the infamous John Bunting was loaning money to the third world for fees and bonuses and no longer making little mortgages and little to moderate to large size business loans in Philadelphia. The money was in the fees and bonuses and the State Department implied no doubt in private off the book meetings with Bunting that the U.S. Government would never let John or First Pennsylvania go under giving loans that would never, could never be repaid from countries the U.S. Government had once looked kindly upon in the hopes of thwarting the spread of godless and capitalist-less belief systems.

Problem with Bunting was that he was not I-V league. A graduate of local Temple. He actually had commuted to college. No network of I-V buddies at State or Treasury to help a guy out when the real bills came due at his Philly bank, one of the oldest in the country btw.

And I have written how Archbishop Krol was bankrolled on his trips to Asia, and Africa, and making substantial in those days contributions of like 50k to start RC hospitals and RC colleges and RC seminaries in these very poor, poor nations. And in the hopes of swaying some local Asian and or African Cardinal to vote for him as pope once Paul VI died. etc.

That Krol was bankrolled by a Polish American Multimillionaire and businessman John Piszek, originally from Chicago and later Philadelphia who was a founder of Mrs. Paul's Frozen Seafood, a business started btw while on strike to make some off the books cash selling crab cakes at local bars in Philly on weekends. And the business took off but they named the business after his partner Mr. Paul because it was an Anglo sounding name and not Polish which was thought not to be a good PR name to sell frozen seafood with. Piszek with the millions rolling in starting in the 1950s after he bought out Mr. Paul, his partner, was forever bitter that his name, an immigrant name, was not good enough to make it big in American business. He compensated and began to give money away to all causes Polish, locally and abroad. Archbishop Krol and getting him as the first Polish American Pope to be elected and which is why I speculate that the Papal Nuncio saw some merit in giving Krol the first Archbishop's seat that became available and that usually got a red hat with it eventually, was a logical thing, and after much cash no doubt got funneled into Polish RC church projects and charities in Poland behind the Iron Curtain. etc.

And then with all the cash rolling into the Vatican for projects in Poland, they gave Amleto Cicognani a dispensation to become Cardinal, it not being allowed under the rules that sent the RC into a tailspin in the Reformation, because his brother was already a Cardinal. Brother, Nephew, what was the difference in giving power to your crony relatives. And Amleto becomes Secretary of State of the Vatican in 1961.

I have often wondered considering the almost miraculous, with no mortal help, in the rise of auxiliary Bishop John Krol to become a contender in the 1978 papal elections, if he had the dream on his own or if somebody had whispered in his ear the dream that he could one day become the first Polish American Pope with a little help from his friends like John Piszek and Amleto Cicognani. Wink. Nod.

Which makesme wonder, with cash coming into Poland from the west via the Vatican etc. how Karol Wojtyla also may have gotten the idea that he too could become the first Polish Polish Pope with a little help from his friends. While the Vatican made its members pray every Sunday after mass for the conversion of Russia to Christianity, the real big chuck of RC R/E the Vatican would like to start with in that conversion to the Russians from Communism back into Orthodox back into Roman Christians, that the Catholic prize of Poland was possible but maybe the money of Mrs. Paul's fish sticks was not enough and maybe other sources of funds would have to be found to create networks to revive and or sustain unions that would likely first be the force to make any real changes in a Worker's State like Poland.

And I have to wonder if the former Papal Nuncio to the United States 1933-1959 had made any worthwhile secular contacts in Washington DC over the years like at the State Department and or the dare I say it - the CIA.

That between the puppet master Amleto Cicognani in the west and the east whispering temptation into the ears of gullible Polish clerics, that maybe the long term planning of the CIA was becoming a match for the old long term planning of the Czar's secret police aka the KGB.

Wojtyla was already a player with the KGB, he could play ball and not threaten the state and the state let him play dressed up cleric for some of the masses and proclaim a free state for all the workers and their perhaps private beliefs. Whatever.

I have often wondered about Wojtyla's resume about being associated with the resistance during WWII and in occupied slave state Poland and his survival as a worker in a stone quarry etc. Anybody can put anything on a resume. Like flipping houses in Philly on the QT and anonymously is just as good as "Freedom Fighter" on the PR releases after the Polish American Cardinal relinquished his block of Pope Votes to the Polish Polish Cardinal in 1978 after the mysterious death of the last Italian Italian pope. And anybody can flip themselves while being played as a pawn in Global Political Chess - flip as in double agents and or triple agents of the KGB etc. - comrades and brothers in Christ?

And the collateral damage, messes to be cleaned up by the masses caused from players, past their prime and also dead, still hanging around from those 1960s - 1970s games of chess here forty and fifty years later.

Whatever.

Shrug.

Putin Making Progress into Grinding Old Russians into Woof Woof Dog Food to Feed Trump's Pet Dogs

No doubt fresh from secret Helsinki circle jerk talks of Trump and Putin, and Trump telling Putin to raise the retirement age for old people in Russia in order to steal more of the Russian national treasury.  Putin reportedly worth 100 billion dollars now can achieve his goal toward a trillion dollar individual wealth. *

*(Trump about to brand his Russian made dog food?)

Just take it out of the hides of your people and raise the retirement age for women from 55 to 63 and men from 60 to 65 for a state sponsored retirement check. The Wharton Global Spreadsheet at work and the American Model of retirement in weak economies where there are no fit jobs for human beings past the age of 45 in America and or Russia and or the so called civilized world.

Once your hormones fade with age, so does the attractiveness of your ability to perform like circus dogs for your CEO employers making their tens of millions in bonuses screwing little people out of pensions and decent hourly wages etc.

Soylent Green is perhaps too old a movie to illustrate what to do with useless old people.

My all time favorite below as a microcosm now to illustrate Trump's and now Putin's tiny little ruling entourage bubble worlds where what you know as a crony does not matter as much as who you blow in order to survive etc. Betsy D etc. Whatever.

Trump has no pets. Something that no one ever dares write about it. Your won't hear anything here form me. - and - Considering the photos of his two oldest boys in their thirties with guns and African road kill testosterone proving delayed stunted adolescent bullshit etc, not even a pet cat. Meow!p

Welcome to Woop Woop, a Hollywood gem of a hidden classic

is about what to do when you are a con man stranded in the middle of nowhere, Woop Woop Australia for example, except playing old Oscar and Hammerstein movies and making communally produced Woof Woof dog food out of road kill kangaroos. Great movie stuff on many symbolic and metaphoric levels of the modern reality of people left behind from the global anti-human spreadsheet etc.

Thousands of people have taken part in protests in cities across Russia to express their anger at government proposals to raise the pension age.
Demonstrators in the capital, Moscow, carried banners reading: "We want to live on our pensions, not die at work."
The government says it wants to raise the pension age from 60 to 65 for men, and from 55 to 63 for women, to help cope with a shrinking workforce.
But unions warn many people will not live long enough to claim a pension.
Some 12,000 people took to the streets of Moscow to protest at the controversial plans.

Sean Spicer Accused of Using the "N" Word at Plush Private Rhode Island School

Oh how sharper than a serpent's tooth is the data life and memory of the Social Media or a kid scorned in High School.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/black-man-accuses-sean-spicer-of-hurling-racial-slur-at-him/ar-BBLaBsk?OCID=ansmsnnews11

Alex Lombard, who was standing behind a small group of people waiting in line to meet Spicer and get him to sign the book, called out Spicer's name and said they went to Portsmouth Abbey School together. Spicer waved to him and said, "Hey. Yeah. How are you?"
Lombard, a Newport native who now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, then accused Spicer of calling him the N-word and trying to fight him when they were at school.
"You don't remember that you tried to fight me?" Lombard asked. "But you called me a (N-word) first."
A security guard approached Lombard and led him away as he kept talking: "I was 14 then. I was a scared kid then, Sean. I'm not scared to fight you now."
A Newport Daily News video of the encounter doesn't show how Spicer, who was seated at a table signing books, reacted to being accused of using the racial slur. But his publicist said he was shocked by the allegation.

FOX NEWS - Modern Minstrel Show Reinforcing A Jim Crow Image Comfortable to White A-Merica.

I accidentally got caught off guard and caught watching about 90 seconds of a FOX NEWS morning hour long "Hate" this morning - up from the mandatory ten minute "Hate" of George Orwell's 1984 fame. And wearing "Hannity White Face" grease paint.

That witch, Representative Walters, a Black Woman, two strikes against her already, and her rabble rousing slave upsetting voice up from her demand for real people to connect with the people, more like corporate paid Zombies, in Congress.

And White Folks in the Admin and Congress being upset for their daily bread in the local DC restaurant with $350 BOTTLES of Lobbyist paid French wine i.e. Paul Ryan's favorite, got a sound bite combination with Senator Corey Booker, BLACK man, from New Jersey also inciting the poor dark end of the population against the massas in the Plantation House crowd who now occupy in modern time and sense, the front CEO office and gated community private members only rural Country Clubs of America.

The BLACK man was saying such an alarming inciteful thing like ordinary people should go down to Washington DC and "get right in the faces of the people in Congress" to gets things done that the common people want and need and apparently not what the corporate masters of America want and really don't need.

Well there is this whole coded thing over at FOX NEWS on all kinds of levels but the real bottom line is that FOX NEWS operates on the hundreds year old play book of slaves, fear of Nat Turners and Plantation owners and Jim Crow jokes and financing minstrel black face to deface reality and reinforce all the fears of bookie men and goblins that children are fed to in order to go to bed early or eat their vegetables.

Fear of a slave rebellion is always out there WHITE AMERICA !!!

So beware.

An Understanding of All Things Beautiful - Part Two

Like I do a lot of is cross references current things going on in my mind and what I am doing in amateur history searching, I sometimes let my searches take me someplace.

And running into old newspaper script and fame shot photos put my visual interpreting brain on overtime.

First of all on the news today something about the perfect PC Vegan? Far left Taliban high holies protecting womanhood or whatever finding a off color, or colour for the Brits, Twitter of Trevor Noah on the Daily Show, and or joke about Aborigine women while in Australia that was distasteful. But I agree cunty Jim Jefferies, an Ozie, if it don't hurt somebody else in the telling of the joke, it's not a good joke.

The thing about Noah is that he is young and half black and South African and has a global appeal personality even if he might be a shit in private. Whatever.

He obviously is not telling the right jokes about the Right in a correct and perfect dogmatic matter, so it time to attack him etc.

That and some people miss Jon Stewart.

This is blends into my researching a variety of 19th century blending into early 20th century circus, stage and vaudeville people who all lived in their own bubble world and some of them were very successful and some died broke.

The most beautiful woman in America in 1880 - the "Ten Thousand Dollar Beauty" Louise Montague was an invention of Philadelphia Showman Adam Forepaugh, who I had never heard of before a few days ago. I was looking for an obit page and ran into a big circus ad in the online newspaper and the ad was so filled with activity and energy I was amazed how I had never heard of someone like Adam Forepaugh, (how do you pronounce that?) who in his day was as big or bigger and better than Barnum as a showman when it came to animal display, humane care and exhibition of horses and exotic animals in probably the original Greatest Show of Earth and originating right there in old Philly.

So Louise Montague leads me out of curiosity as to what she did and where she ended up as in a graveyard to see if all of what had been written about her and her career was true, they had their own version of fake news back when, and typos etc.

Could not find her burial place. NYC obits mostly end in "Internment private" whereby Philly obits most times include the place of burial, that is if they have been handing around the hat at the local church hall and or saloon and the obit in the paper would know where a poor person's final resting place might actually be.

No middlemen back then btw. "Undertaker" was usually a carpenter that made a fresh pine box for the deceased or he was rich enough to have a few spec caskets on hand for various size bodies. Wake and funeral were in the residence of the deceased or one of their relatives, no church service on average, and a ride on the back of the carpenter's wagon for the casket to the graveyard. Very efficient. And up to the turn of the 20th century, poor people's funeral cost an average of about 20 dollars in big east coast cities. 7-10 dollars for a plot, 8-10 dollars for the box. And 3-4 dollars for the grave diggers. Amen optional.

Louise Montague after a little research in what some say was the first American Beauty Contest was already married into show business and married to the Allen half of the famed vaudeville minstrel team of Lester and Allen.

Her personal beauty was accented by her perfect white teeth that showed when she spoke. Forepaugh the judge and awarder of the ten thousand dollar "talent/beauty" search made his first fortune in horse trading before falling into the circus business, a default on a horse debt, left him part owner of a circus etc... knew good teeth when he saw them on horse flesh and what difference is there in the filly of a woman?

Some misleading urban legends in some of her obits about once being married to one time theater matinee idol Henry James Montague from England, aka Harry Montague, who if straight was quite a heartthrob.

And even if not straight, still a dish? LOL

Died alone in San Francisco at age 37, never married and buried in his manager's family plot in Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn - his manager, one of the famous Wallacks of Wallack's theater fame at 13th and Broadway, NYC.

Trying to find Louise Montague's grave site led me into the obits of the both Lester and Allen, though at first I did not know they were black face players. One clue was in the obit of Billy Lester whose legacy it would seem in his obit named the wonderful songs he would be remembered by:

NY Herald 12 July 1893

Allen died in Bellevue Hospital of cirrhosis of the liver and was cremated care of the Actor's Fund.  I suspect Louise's one son at her death, also named Montague, was Allen's child.

And the idea of black face as a means to deface a whole race of people was not brought home to me until January 1, 1965 when the televised all day TV event in Philly of the Mummers Parade when some local judge banned all black face of performers in that Parade of local neighborhood, local ethnic banjo and accordion players and music clubs all of which were white. That parade segregated until that point as well until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which precipitated the judge's ban on black face.

I can remember seeing a group on TV back then playing their banjos and accordions as they marched with black cottony wigs and fake leopard skin costumes and the word across the family TV viewing was that that group had probably planned on winning a prize using black face. No comment beyond that. My parents were party line kind of people. In retrospect in general their point of views were dictated by the editorial pages of the Evening Bulletin, the protestant Republican newspaper, as opposed to the morning Inquirer, Jewish and Democratic point of view. But somehow briefly, my parents went visual media and sided with the fairness of civil rights as seen every night on TV with firehoses and dogs let loose on Negros in the South etc. They did verbally continue to tell us their liberl POV on civil rights. But Vietnam etc. soured them somehow and I know they secretly voted for George Wallace in 1968. Shrug.

With me in my research of circus and show biz people here make me wonder why this third party minstrel thing endured so long except to reinforce a false notion of stupid, lazy and dishonest black people in America.

And to be quite honest I am ashamed to know of this black face thing in American history and have to wonder why immigrant Jews like Harry and Al Jolson made so much money and fame continuing the white Protestant line to keep the ex-slave Jim Crows down. And then after some further research I see that Billy Lester of Lester and Allen is buried in an old Jewish Cemetery in Brooklyn.

I guess success in America for Russian Jewish immigrants like the Jolsons was hinged on the pain and suffering of others even if their money making entertainment helped to perpetuate the stereotype of others, sharing the guilt of the original white slave masters, their outsourced guilt a condition of immigrants to assimilate and accept the origin myths of white men as the bona fide (Fake) origin myths of America.

Which leads me to wonder why so many people in show business hide behind masks then and now. And even then, 'da Gays, were probably hiding in plain site. etc.

That the most famous minstrel team of McIntyre and Heath set my gaydar off a bit because of doing so much research in the past and seeing how coded language on all levels of American society exists, has existed to hide the truth about one's true self in so many instances.

That the first minstrel group to get the title "headliners" in vaudeville was McIntyre and Heath. They headlined for close to six decades together. That they both seemed to lead parallel private lives to match their public lives. That anemic beard marriages or not, gaydar?, I am many times wrong on that btw, these two highly paid black faced minstrel performers invested in Long Island real estate over the years, made millions, lived near each other over the decades, in Long Island and wintered in Florida living near each other and dying near in time to each other, one at least dying surrounded by nieces and nephews and a male companion with theatrical background, a groupie? in some sad like ending to it all before being put to rest in a Greek temple like mausoleum somewhere in some rich cemetery. And all this built on one famous racist stage skit of one darkie talking to another darkie and lamented the loss of trees that were now extinct and use to grow hams on dem.

NYSUN19 Aug 1938

That the idiocy of the racist or bigot who sees substance in raw and vicious humor is a bully humor like Minstrel Black Face that sends evil vicious and many times anonymous Tweets into the modern age to reinforce disinformation.

But southern blacks who supposedly liked the humor of McIntyre and Heath had their own way of displaying truth out in the open about "dem boys" in an oppressed truth world for American blacks made fun of by "minstrels".

Mueller About To Get Assange/Wikileaks to Interrogate - Last Nail in Trump Political Coffin?

Impeccable timing and calling in a few favors worldwide no doubt, by former FBI Chief and Special Russian Election Collusion investigator Robert Mueller.

Assange no doubt shitting himself and quite regular prior to his release onto the streets of London. lol

Nobody can hide from the Mueller Inquisition.

That includes you Vlad Dearest.

Ecuador 'close' to evicting Julian Assange from London embassy

Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno went to Britain on Friday to meet with officials to finalise a deal under which protection for Assange will be withdrawn and he will be turned over to British authorities, Greenwald wrote on his website The Intercept.

The Australian national has resided in Ecuador's London embassy since 2012, after he breached bail in relation to sexual assault allegations he faced in Sweden. He cannot be arrested inside the embassy.
Sweden has since dropped its case against him, but Assange believes he will be extradited to the US for questioning over WikiLeaks activities if he leaves the building.

Former Bush Doctor Shot Dead - Houston - Random Act of Violence in Age of Trump ?

Sounds like some opening scene of a James Bond 007 Spy Movie?

George H.W. Bush’s Former Doctor Shot And Killed While Riding Bike

HOUSTON (AP) — A cardiologist who once treated former President George H.W. Bush was fatally shot by a fellow bicyclist Friday while riding through a Houston medical complex, and police were trying to determine if the shooting was random or a targeted act.
The shooting happened around 9 a.m. as Dr. Mark Hausknecht was going northbound through the Texas Medical Center, said Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner.
“The suspect was on a bicycle as well. Rode past the doctor, turned and fired two shots. The doctor immediately went down,” Finner said. Hausknecht, 65, hit at least once, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Trump's Putin Fawning - July 2018

Donald Trump has said he is looking forward to a second meeting with Vladimir Putin, as both leaders hit out at critics of their controversial summit in Helsinki.
A day after Mr Trump said for the first time he held the Russian leader personally responsible for Moscow’s meddling in the 2016 election, he said he was looking ahead to a second meeting to begin implementing some of the ideas they discussed in Finland.
“The summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media, Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

"Trump Giving Aid and Comfort to the Enemy" - Senator Flake, R, Arizona

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2018/07/20/gop-senator-trump-providing-aid-and-comfort-to-the-enemy/23486203/

“Well, we saw earlier this week in Helsinki what was a truly an Orwellian moment," Flake said. "What we saw earlier this week in Helsinki is what happens when you wage war on objective reality for nearly two solid years. Calling real things fake, and fake things, real.”
Sen. Flake, who is retiring later this year has emerged as a vocal GOP critic of the president and a potential primary challenger for Trump in 2020. He took to the floor in hopes of passing a resolution that would give Senate support to findings by the intelligence community, confirming again that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.
The resolution was blocked shortly after his speech, but Flake was undeterred in his criticism of Trump -- at a time when the president is facing strong criticism for his actions during a press conference with Putin in Helsinki.

Upcoming Diplomatic Visit in Fall - Putin Bringing New Fabric 4 Curtains in Oval Office (to feel more at home)

I look forward to my upcoming trip to America this Fall in time for their meager elections as a gesture of contempt for all democracy. I will sit down and tell President Roosevelt how the German Peace is the only acceptable permanent peace in Europe.

And I look forward as a vegetarian who eats no animal meat for Eleanor Roosevelt to share with me for my cook, from what I hear is a recipe for Killer Molasses Cookies.

Yum. Yum.

Killer Melasses.

Yum. Yum.

An Understanding of All Things Beautiful - Part One

After a hurricane.

It is hot and humid and I do not like air conditioning. Something about sleeping in airconditioning in 2002 and waking up with a blood clot in the leg -

that took a fewdays to recognize, seek treatment and end up in a hospital. Ended up in a room with a Dementia and or Alzheimer's patient. An old guy who was in WWII and knew French and was an interpreter for the brass in Paris etc.

I am getting old now and wonder if that is where I end up. Trapped in a body with long term memories and terrorized by not knowing where I am here and now or who everybody is no matter who they say they are or claim to be in relation to me? And repeating at random those old memories to strangers or captive audiences in the next bed. Or pulling all the things off and out of your arms and the next person in the next bed is paging the nurses to redo all the things inserted into one's body. And the staff wanting to put you in the hallway to better monitor you and you yelling discrimination and anti-Semitism and your roommate saying that "he" is not a burden to have in the same room and maybe even glad to be thinking of other things rather than one's own mortality or reaching 50 in a few months and remembering Marshall who died when he was 49 and you liked him, that stranger, better than your own brother. And thinking sometimes too much how much life is unfair. And remembering that guy's favorite sarcastic line - "life sucks and then you die".

That whole nine or ten months leading off of the 911 attacks downtown left a lot of the population shell shocked and walking around in a daze and many more like myself no doubt suffering a form of PTSD that raised paranoid and blood pressure levels to cause health issues such as blood clots in myself. That after the attacks I did less traveling or shopping in leisure time and thus w/ less exercise and becoming more unhealthy.

Well getting back to the weather, I had wanted then to look at old photos, from the family photo album (sounds so old fashioned and obsolete?) of a childhood trip to Brigantine New Jersey. I still would have liked to have seen them now.

A friend of mine on FB from childhood who is more of a friend now than back when in the old neighborhood had once mentioned how he had recently found a bunch of old family pictures in the trash of a neighbor who died of old age or something like that. That their kids were cleaning out the house to sell it. That the photos did not matter to them so much as the money from the sale of the house. I lamented that there might be so much history in those photos. He more or less shrugged, no symbol for shrug on FB, and commented that that happens all the time these days. Whatever.

My father was cheap and or he did not make a lot of bread working in a steel mill. So when they closed the plant down every year in July or August for two weeks to retool and fix the steel furnaces etc, the inmate wage slaves had to amuse themselves.

The normal family I think went to Atlantic City or Wildwood, rented rooms at a motel with a pool and went to the beach in the day and walked the boardwalks at night for shits and giggles. No cable TV and the local Jersey broadcasting stations were either in Trenton or Philly itself, our family home base, but the Philly TV reception had a lot of snow and poor reception and the Trenton station seemed to be more orientated to Central Jersey and New York based Northern Jersey news stuff. It all seemed off a bit, not quite normal comfort zone in the living room quality stuff to me. You saw this TV programming stuff in the lobbies of motels with their wide glass paneled windows around the check in desk etc. and old dark ancient lobbies of old decrepit buildings called hotels and built likely in the 1890s or so up to the 1920s.  The fabric of Atlantic City was definitely frayed around the edges. Wildwood was more likely post war and motel modern. And A.C. witnessed by those walking eight to ten blocks from free or cheap metered parking, crowded spaces at night, on the way into the nightly boardwalks excursion in Wildwood or Atlantic City from the outlying boonies where we were renting rooms.

In any case there were no TVs in the cheap rooms we rented in Brigantine once or at least twice in memory. There was radio.

Not quite rooms. More like tar paper covered shacks. But it probably was covered by those horrible asphalt impregnated shingles, with some asbestos mixed in, of brown shaped bricks that covered houses in Philly in the 20s and 30s when modern fashion could make it possible not paint old out of date Victorian structures and cover them with glamorous new cutting edge Jazz Age technology.

The shacks were on the beach on stilts and there were like 4 or five of them clustered at the street end of  a pier. No air conditioning on the beach. Very breezy through screened windows and the crash of waves on the wooden supports underneath at high tide at night.

The shacks had a common room with a couch, a few wooden chairs, a table, a stove and an old fridge. That and three bedrooms and a bathroom. No doubt our crowd of four kids and two parents was a small weekend party of sorts to occupy the premises. But dad was a tight manager of money. That even in a back water then of Brigantine, the weekend rent on the shack would have been very high. Dad would drive us down on Monday, find a place for a two to three day vacation in off mid week slotted space before the weekend crowd would drift in around Wednesday afternoon. We were there to pick up on the weekend gap from those leaving on Monday morning after a weekend at the shore.

My father did not operate on using a phone to call ahead and make reservations. He was old fashioned and used sight to look for vacancy signs on affordable looking accommodations. Affordable meaning owners on the premises and the property a bit past its prime and or in need of a coat of fresh paint.

The floors were old worn out linoleum throughout.  Sand everywhere constantly trekked in from the beach and to forever be swept back out with a broom. My mother used the opportunity of these trips to buy new linens for double beds at McCrory's that would be used on the vacation and transported back home after the trip.

The smell of coffee brewing on the stove in a percolator is something I will always remember as the breakfast bacon sizzled over the very distinctive smell of butane bottled gas supplying the stove flames and against the framework of fresh ocean air and the crash of distant waves, the tide having gone out a ways on the beach below.

We would hang out on the beach during the day, getting sun burned even with Coppertone as a sun screen and its greasy industrial smell and almost the only product on the market that I knew about. We had an old Coleman aluminum ice chest full of ice and cans of soda and probably no cans of beer. No alcohol on the beach. People from Pennsylvania had an adherence to rule books mentality, nature of the beast in the original German settlers along with the Quakers from the beginning of that state.

Accoutrements for kids would have been at least one new sand bucket with small shovel in bright colors and shiny interior, bucket being made of metal in those days and not plastic. This bought at McCrory's while mom was selecting the vacation bed sheets.

Near the pier the shade underneath had other smells, more distinct than those in direct sunlight, of decaying sea materials and seaweed still clinging to splinters in the wood pilings from the previous night's high ocean tide.

The main activities of the day would be collecting sea shells, wading into the ocean a few times and building sand castles.

That there is on the Internet some photos of Fedullo's Pier at 44th Street. When I have mentioned this pier to others or on the Internet a younger generation will assume the pier is one that in later times than the 1950s or 60s that got repurposed as a Haunted House at Halloween kind of business deal but that pier I believe used to be somewhere around 27th Street on the island. Brigantine was quite undeveloped back when. Now looking at Google satellite images as an island it is bursting, crowded with summer townhouses and condos with no fishing piers left as I can see.

Down the old, what seemed like a rotting wood pier, jutting maybe 500 feet into the ocean there was a single story structure of maybe a thousand square feet that housed a restaurant of sorts and a display case full of cigar boxes and souvenirs and boxes of salt water taffy. The restaurant per say had maybe four or five tables covered in red and white checked and laminated table cloths. And beyond this structure was another fifty or so feet of pier that near may have had the best fishing and maybe they charged a fee to fish there or maybe they just were near cold bottles of beer in the restaurant. The one time we went in there at sunset, no doubt for dad to buy some Lucky Strikes, there was a fat middle aged man there wearing suspenders and sweating as he ate over his pile of spaghetti and meatballs in the dim light of that place from a few light bulbs.

There was no charge for us to make a look around the back pier during the day. While I probably saw some fish caught, my memory only sees one fisherman taking a baby shark about 10 inches long off a hook, banging its head on the top of the wooden railing and throwing it back into the water. Shark prejudice before Jaws.

On those short 3 days to Brigantine, once we got settled in, there would be at least one afternoon trip to Atlantic City. Over the bridge and other byways, we would end up walking up and down the Boardwalk blending in with the crowds walking by ancient hotels in graceful and not so graceful decay along side stores and storefronts selling everything touristy, tee shirts, ashtrays. Galleries of chance, darts thrown at balloons or wooden rings tossed over metal milk bottles, all to win and claim a cheap stuffed animal as a prize. A lot of barkers selling steak knives or the latest plastic kitchen aid gizmos. Most of the show was the talk and bravado of the barker who sometimes I had once read in a Philly paper were in one example a teacher, who on his summer vacation, made as much in 3 months in commissions selling their junk as they make in 9 months as civil servants in schools.

There were the boardwalk amusements not much bigger in scope than the local state fair's rides and Ferris wheel etc. With a limited budget we got on at least of two of the cheaper rides.  Went into Planters past the guy wearing the big paper mache Mr. Peanut costume.

Steel Pier was off limits because of the budget. Never got to see the lady on a horse jump into a tank of water, an item that seemed to the most advertising on billboards on the highway to Atlantic City.

There was also a night trip to A.C. That seemed more exciting. No sun and chilly. Needed a jacket or sweater to walk along the boardwalk then. Lots of smells of the concessions stands full of peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs and cotton candy. Cotton candy for some reason was not something we were allowed to buy. Only got to try that years later as an adult and was disappointed btw. Sometimes parents do know what is best for you. lol

The big thing at night at home was playing kids card games of fish or old maid and dealing with the pain of sunburn and the b.s. the parents talking up how cool Noxzema was on sunburn. Sure it went on cold feeling but then the burn came back.

That two or three days at the boonies of Brigantine were enough for a lower middle class family from the city. The only thing missing is a photo of it all.

We did have a hand me down baby brownie from our aunt, my fathers sister and it only seemed to use black and white film. It had not flash, so all the family photos from that period were outdoors. The one photo in my mind is a photo of us kids, all sunburned and half smiling through the pain, with mom at the front, near the street, with the end of the pier and restaurant structure in the shot of Fedulla's pier. A lot of history and detail in that photo minus dad who was taking the shot. A photo I thought that would be great to post on the Internet.

But it, the family photos, went west with mom after dad died and she and the other siblings seemed to have some wanderlust attraction to the sunbelt in New Mexico and Arizona and I would not go to anyplace that did not have a subway or proven reliable public transportation.

So the urge to find one photo and some other photos crept into this old man's need to reconcile with the past, to affirm a place in that past, and a need to reflect on that past etc.

But those photos seemed to elude me.

Which reminds me of my older sister's holy communion, it being celebrated at an uncle's house, along with our female cousin the same age as my sister also celebrating her holy communion at some neighboring parish. And I remember being in the living room at night on a couch sitting on my grandfather's lap, my mother's father, my namesake grandfather and going blind as an older cousin had like several spotlights in my face and they played with some new toy bought on credit at some fancy department store, where out aunt, and cousin's mom worked at downtown. That I remember seeing those horrible without sound silent home movies at some later date in that uncle's house after which the house was torn down to make way for progress and I-95 and after our female cousin had died at age ten of leukemia.

I asked my aunt at a funeral years later and her son, my cousin, a career teacher in the Philly public school system, who was giving me a car lift at that funeral between the church and the cemetery if those home movies were still around and viewable and maybe even convertible to video tape, in fashion at that moment, and all I got was a shrug. Nobody could seem to remember or maybe a lot of it all got chucked when the city condemned the house and my aunt and uncle moved over to Jersey.

Whatever again.
